The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart: Young Adult Friction

The full-length from The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart will drop here in the States on February 3. The album will be released by Slumberland Records.

I probably should shut the eyes in the cupboard for a few, but the press release I received this evening contained a lyric sheet and suddenly all of the songs we’ve been sharing from The Pains over the past year have taken on a new life. I doubt I’m the only person out there who’s a sucker for clever lyrics. If a great song tells an even greater story, it makes it even…er…greater, does it not? I think so anyhow. I doubt I’d love Pulp as much as I do if it weren’t for Jarvis’ lyrics. OK, I probably still would…but you know what I’m getting at.

I found myself falling in love with “Young Adult Friction” all over again and found the need to share the lyrics. While the song title gives a fairly clear description of what the song is about, until I read the lyrics, I was somewhat uncertain of where things went down, if you’re on my page.

Between the stacks in the library
Not like anyone stopped to see
We came, they went, our bodies spent
Among the dust and the microfiche

Dark winters wear you down
Up again to see the dawn
In your worn sweatshirt
And your Mother’s old skirt
It’s enough to turn my studies down

Now that you feel, you say it’s not real

I never thought I would come of age
Let alone on a moldy page
You put your back to the spines
And you said it was fine
If there’s nothing really left to say

You’re taking toffee with your vicodin
Something sweet to forget about him

If you go your own way, I can go my own way
And we’ll never speak of it again

Don’t check me out.

Thanks for posting these lyrics. I listened to this song five times in a row on my way to work this morning.

    Great album.
