Holy crap! New BP!
Bloc Party unveiled their latest single ‘Mercury’ on BBC’s Radio 1 with Zane Lowe today. Everyone is saying it’s so different but I’m not sure. I mean, it is most assuredly different than anything on Weekend In The City (thank god, no more Jacknife Lee. Look buddy, you do well by Snow Patrol but stay the hell away from Bloc Party, mmmkay?).
However, I think this reminds me a bit of my favorite song from Silent Alarm, ‘She’s Hearing Voices’. This new track sounds very Erol Alkan-ish, so I’m thinking it’s the result of sessions with Paul Epworth for LP3, but the band haven’t confirmed anything, not even that it will actually appear on LP3.
I’ll be honest - at first I thought, ‘Hell, something’s gone wrong!’. But I’ve listened to it a lot and I’m pretty enthused about this. It’s really tribal and pretty freakin’ daring for a band like Bloc Party to eschew guitars in favor of bombastic drums and trumpets. The video is mad, with monkeys creating some kind of crab-minotaur hybrid that becomes President.

I dunno. Loved the first album, disliked the second and pretty much discarded them from my bands following the “were going electronic” - “oh no we’re not” debacle last year.
They sound more and more like a band that thinks they can have the impact of Radiohead, but come out sounding cheap and unfocused. Each to their own, but they’d make better material if they knew their own limitations.

I really liked the song as well. It was a daring chance that they just took, so I am hoping the rest of the album is pretty amazing.
Yes, people might say they’re deluded, but I think they’re taking chances and that is just as important when you’re creating music. Sometimes they work and everyone loves you, sometimes everyone craps on you.
You can’t win ‘em all.
