I kinda flipped over Yea Big + Kid Static’s self-titled debut, which came out in the fall on Jib Door Records. It’s hit or miss at times, but one can’t deny the duo’s ruthless pursuit of hip hop originality in a world where the majors are largely swallowed up by rap stagnancy. Combining their nostalgia for old school shit like De La Soul and belying their affinity for avant-rap like Anticon and Def Jux, they’ve built a winning formula fueled by a nerdy comic book aesthetic and the understanding that you don’t have to have the finest flow to make it fresh. But now they’ve followed it up with a new song that so far eclipses anything from their debut that I can’t help but get stoked for what’s next. It’s got a dirty beat and a nasty streak embodied by Kid Static launching into the first verse so viciously silly you have to wonder where it came from: “Don’t be flashin’ your sandwich like you’re better than me / I’ll smack that sandwich out your hand leave your bread in the street / I’ll grab your hair, rub your head and your face in the meat / Grinding condiments in your eyes, repetitively.” It just might be the ultimate suburbanite fuck-you of this year, and next time somebody gives you that look in Panera, you’ll know what to do.
