Rock Sellout Winter Mix

Happy 25th of December to everyone!

So I started this out thinking of a Christmas mix, but I found that to be a touch limiting so it’s sort of evolved into a Winter ‘07 mix. I think it’s better this way, especially since Christmas music tends to sound very same-y, even if it’s by an indie band (whether sincere or being ironic). In fact, my tolerance for Christmas muzak has gone proportionately down with every day I enter a public space, and am forced to hear ‘White Christmas’ for the 2,485th time.

That being said, there are ‘Christmas’ songs included here, they just happen to be equally represented by a fair number of songs that don’t necessarily say anything about Christmas or Winter, but nonetheless sound right to me. This time of year manages to drudge up not only images of snow or Christmas, but love & loss, family, aging, etc. Take ‘What’s a Girl to do’ - it may not have any direct connection to the winter season, however, it still ‘feels’ like a cold, lonely winter night. Or Switches ‘Every Second Counts’ - it may not have an immediate connection, but I feel like the sentiment behind that song is one that people can identify with when reflecting on the passing year. And hey, it’s only fair to include some slightly depressing numbers on here, after all, we need to represent for all those folks with Seasonal Affective Disorder, right? No one ever makes mixes for them, and that might be part of the reason why they’re so damn depressed.

(Also, from the ‘Technology Has Yet Again Rebelled Against it’s Human Masters’ department, I had originally wanted this to be a true ‘mix’ - available as both individual downloads as well as a mixed version. My computer had other ideas, so we’ll have to settle for what I’ve got.)

With all that in mind, I offer you the Rock Sellout Winter/Christmas ‘07 Mix:

1)The Raveonettes - Christmas Song
2)Bat for Lashes - What’s a Girl to do?
3)Maps - When You Leave
4)Death Cab For Cutie - Christmas (Baby Come Home)
5)Jesca Hoop - Love and Love Again
6)The Pogues - Fairytale of New York
7)Malcolm Middleton - We’re All Going to Die
8 )The Organ - Memorize the City
9)Nada Surf - Blizzard of ‘77
10)Softlightes - The Ballad of Theodore & June
11)Robbers on High Street - Big Winter
12)Fountains of Wayne - I Want an Alien for Christmas
13)The Ramones - Merry Christmas I Don’t Want to Fight Tonight
14)Switches - Every Second Counts
15)Belle & Sebastian - The Twelve Days of Christmas (Live @ Peel Christmas Party)

Hope you’re all having a fantastic holiday!

- Sean
