The Silent Years: The Globe

The Silent Years will be releasing their second album, The Globe, on August 12th. The band have uploaded a few new songs from the release on their Myspace page, so if you’re a fan…go give them a proper streaming.

Those in the New York area next week, will have the opportunity to catch the band on Friday, May 16th @ The Music Hall of Williamsburg with Bishop Allen and The War on Drugs.

“…astute pop craftsmen who should have enough tricks up their sleeves to last beyond a group’s initial burst of creativity.”- Pitchfork - 7.3

“Underground Artist of the Year 2007″ – Spin Magazine

“(The Silent Years) straddle the line between indie rock and pop, with soaring melodies, precise guitar work and Josh Epstein’s vocals (think a less anguished Gary Puckett, if you remember the ’60s) folded into distinctly modern arrangements” - LA Times

“One of 10 bands out of 1,000 you should see at CMJ this year” - New York Times

“The Silent Years seem to balance traditional pop-rock influences like the Beatles with some guitar-years Radiohead, poppy Sonic Youth and Wilco elements that make them more than a rehash of years past. The result is upbeat indie rock with old-school melodies and modern embellishments “. - Real Detroit Weekly

Radio Ready: Northern Room

Northern Room

Ever bite into a piece of cake and the frosting is so overbearingly sweet that it shoots an unpleasant surge of discomfort to your entire neurosystem?! Well, that’s not exactly the sensation I received after listening to the album Last Embrace from Milwaukee’s Northern Room, but the comparison came to mind. Likewise, I found myself wanting to share it because I know somebody out there somewhere is going to love this. The band’s commercial appeal is hard to overlook.

Speaking of commercial appeal: Milwaukee Radio 88.9 put the band ahead of Fever Marlene in their annual awards listing for POP/ROCK ARTIST OF THE YEAR & T’n’T AWARD (MOST LIKELY TO BLOW UP).

The band will be sharing the Harley Davidson Stage w/Dashboard Confessional at Summerfest in Milwaukee, WI on Jun 28, 6:30PM

Starflyer 59: Dial M

Here’s another from the late night/early morning listening department: It’s been a while since I’ve heard anything about Starflyer 59, so I visited their Myspace page. It looks like they recently put the finishing touches on a new album titled Dial M and are hoping for a late summer release via Tooth & Nail. I dropped the band a message with hopes of finding out more about it…I’ll share any news received.

Reply from the Starflyer clan: “Will be out in the fall…should have the new artwork / songs on our page in a few months.”

Ringo Deathstarr: Revisited

Our friend Kip from The Pains of Being Pure at Heart mentioned something about Ringo Deathstarr this evening which lead to an early morning listening to the brilliance that is their self-titled EP. So damned good, I thought I’d share a slice of it before counting sheep (and then scaring them away with some ferocious snoring).

The 46664 Concert

Nelson Mandela

Now, as someone who attended the first Free Nelson Mandela event at Wembley back in the late 80’s, I was pleased to receive news that we will be given the chance to celebrate the great man’s 90th Birthday! The event will be held at London’s Hyde Park on June 27th. The line up thus far announced is pretty broad (Queen + Paul Rodgers, Annie Lennox, Simple Minds, Leona Lewis, The Sugababes, Dame Shirley Bassey, Razorlight, Andrea and Sharon Corr, Eddy Grant, and Jamelia). I for one would be keen to see Queen featuring Paul Rodgers (Free).

Anyway, click here for 46664 Concert tickets.

The 46664 charity from which all monies raised will be donated are an Aids awareness and prevention charity with particular emphasis on Africa.

Crooked Looks

Brooklyn, who has never had a problem with self-confidence, now has a new reason to be extra proud: allow me to introduce you to Crooked Looks.

These guys blow me away. “VIP” is going to get a hell of a lot of plays in my car the coming months - I’d be hard pressed to find a more perfect song for summer fun. “Neighborhood Block Watch Mutiny” comes close though with its frenetic guitar, sounding sorta like Franz Ferdinand hanging in, well, Brooklyn.

I’m just going to go ahead and tag “Next Big Thing” on these guys - it simply doesn’t seem possible to think otherwise.

Now head to their MySpace page and check out two more tracks, the amazing “Pay My Way” and the throwback-styled “Well Enough Alone.”  I don’t think these guys are capable of writing a bad song - they’re certainly giving no evidence of it.

The band have a debut EP release and an East Coast tour slated for the summer - keep an eye on their MySpace page for updates.  If you can’t wait that long (and really how could you?), they’ve got some shows coming up soon - check ‘em out:

Revenge of the Weekend Jam

Oh man, I’ve been away from Weekend Jams for far too long!

Of course, I’ll admit that part of the reason I’d taken a break from this particular category has been the general lack of killer remixes and/or dance tracks this year. There’s been some good stuff, undoubtedly, but in ‘07 it seemed as though every other day brought a new club hit.

I mean, this year we’ve had that appalling Santogold/Justice mashup floating around, but I’m not posting that (ya know, because it’s awful). Or that new Debbie Harry song. Phew boy, does THAT track make me cry.

But hey, it’s summertime and I’ve got some good ones this week, so that might be a sign of things to come, yeah?

MP3: Client - Xerox Machine (N Joi Radio Edit)

This one is off Client’s new remix album, amusingly called Untitled Remix. Heartland was one of my favorite albums from last year, even though it didn’t seem to get much heat from blogs. Maybe it’s because I’m just a total sucker for girls in matching outfits singing coldly over electro beats. Who knows? But I could definitely get down to this at a club (and currently do in the car).

MP3: IAMX - Spit It Out (Andrew Kowalski Remix)

Another Metropolis artist that has yet to get his props in the USA. This album has been out elsewhere for 2 years! Ridiculous. This remix is by German techno king Andrew Kowalski, who has done some remixes for Dave Gahan as well as Beyonce, of all people. Don’t hold it against him - this is a solid remix for a dark dancefloor.

MP3: Junkie XL - Cities In Dust

A very underappreciated remixer in a lot of ways. Junkie XL is probably most famous for that remix he did for Elvis Presley’s ‘A Little Less Conversation’. However, he’s done a lot cooler work. Sometimes he has a tendency to let his remixes run a bit long, but he knows the importance of quality and sound. This isn’t a remix exactly, more like a re-arrangement. It features vocals from Lauren Rocket.

MP3: Cut Copy - Lights & Music (Boys Noize Happy Birthday Remix)

I guarantee Cut Copy will be on a lot of ‘Best of’ lists this year. I wasn’t sure if he (now they) could match the first album, but they did and then some. This single gets the remix magic from Berlin’s Boys Noize. Sometimes their mixes can be a bit overwhelming, but here they seem to compliment the original track well.

MP3: Van She - Strangers (Van She Tech Remix)

Woohoo! Just after posting about the new Van She yesterday, someone sent me this fantastic mix that the band did on their own track. These guys just have a magic touch when it comes to remixing. Their Feist remix was certainly top of the pops last year, and it seems like they’re the best suited to give their own work a once over. Great track.

MP3: The Presets - This Boy’s In Love (LifeLike Remix)

The third face in the Aussie/Modular Holy Trinity (Van She & Cut Copy being the other two, obviously) is also releasing new material this year. Their new album will hit shelves next Tuesday, but in the meantime you can dance to this remix by Kistune’s LifeLike. The core of the song is left intact, but it’s a stomper!
